Course in Madison will examine leadership of Talmudic heroes

MADISON – On Wednesday, Feb. 3, Chabad of Southeast Morris County will begin a new Jewish Learning Institute course, “Portraits in Leadership: Timeless Tales for Inspired Living.”

The six-week course will meet on six consecutive Wednesdays beginning Feb. 3 at two convenient times: from noon to 1:15 p.m., and again from 7:30 to 9 p.m., at the Chabad Center at 42 Park Ave. in Madison.

“Portraits in Leadership” was created by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI), an internationally acclaimed adult education program running in more than 300 cities worldwide, and boasting over 75,000 students.

Rabbi Shalom Lubin, director of the Chabad Center, said this particular course is structured as a six-step program, and lessons will examine a range of classic Jewish sources, drawing extensively from the stories of the Talmud and modern commentaries that point out their personal significance to life today.

Importantly, Lubin said, “Portraits in Leadership” is designed for people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, and participants don’t have to have any prior experience or background in Jewish learning to attend and enjoy the course.

Additionally, all JLI courses are open to the entire Jewish community, and people from all backgrounds and affiliations are welcome, Lubin said.

The course fee is $75, with early registration by Monday, Jan. 25. The fee includes the course workbook and all materials. All attendees are welcome to attend the first class on Feb. 3 free of charge.

There is also a special couple’s rate of $125, and a limited number of scholarships are available on a first-come, first serve basis.

Guidance And Wisdom

“All of us are looking for tools to deal with day-to-day challenges, and what better way to find guidance than from the wise example of others who encountered hardships and used them as the impetus for growth and change,” said Lubin, a JLI instructor as well as director of Chabad of Southeast Morris County.

“This course will examine the inspiring life story of six figures whose courage and determination helped Judaism weather its darkest hours,” Lubin said. “In the face of the first-century Roman assault on Jerusalem, the fundamental institutions of the Jewish people were utterly destroyed. But with wisdom and verve, these leaders took the radical steps that managed to preserve the essence of Judaism to this very day.”

Chabad of Southeast Morris County is a Jewish outreach and educational organization at 42 Park Ave. in Madison.
