The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present a new course, "Money Matters: Jewish Business Ethics," led by Rabbi Shmuli Bendet of Chabad Lubavitch of Staten Island, beginning Wednesday at the Joan and Alan Bernikow JCC in Sea View.

"The recent failures in the financial industry have drastically changed the way we think about business," explains Rabbi Bendet, a JLI instructor and rabbi at the Chabad in Meiers Corners.

"At JLI, we deeply believe that business should be a force for good, and that's why we're presenting students with timeless Talmudic insights into real-world ethical dilemmas."

The course focuses on the personal ethics of bankruptcy and freeloading, living wages, insider trading, CEO compensation and collective bargaining.

"Money Matters" is designed for people at all levels of Jewish knowledge. JLI, the adult education branch of Chabad Lubavitch, offers programs in more than 300 U.S. cities and in numerous foreign locations.

The six-session series, which is pending continuing education accreditation, is on Wednesdays through Feb. 29 at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $100 per person and $180 per couple, with a textbook included.
