Chabad centers nationwide, including in the Bay Area, are offering a six-session course called “Survival of a Nation: Exploring Israel Through the Lens of the Six-Day War.”

The course, developed by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the June 1967 war, draws on the ideas of great Jewish writers and thinkers to consider moral and political questions arising from the conflict and its aftermath.

“If Judaism is a religion of ideas, why do Jews care so much about land? What are the ethics of preemptive strikes and collateral damage? These are just some of the questions covered in this course,” said Rabbi Yosef Levin, director of Chabad of the Greater South Bay.

“The course also inquires how Israel might protect itself against an enemy that uses human shields, and explores Jewish positions about Israel’s moral obligation concerning territories captured in the Six-Day War.”

The course starts on different days in May in Oakland, Walnut Creek, Fremont, San Rafael, Lafayette, Brentwood, Palo Alto and San Francisco.
