The Goldstein Family Learning Academy Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) is launching its winter course, “Portraits in Leadership: Timeless Tales for Inspired Living.”

The course will study six historical figures who, during the first-century Roman assault on Jerusalem, took the needed steps to preserve the essence of Judaism.

“This course is one part history, one part biography, all parts uplifting inspiration,” said Rabbi Lazer Gurkow, course author, in a press release. “It is about decisions made two thousand years ago that continue to shape the contours of contemporary Jewish life.”

“Students are constantly looking for tools to deal with day-to-day challenges,” says local JLI instructor, Rabbi Yisroel Mangel, in the press release. “What better way to find guidance than from the wise example of others who encountered hardships and used them as the impetus for growth and change.”

A range of Jewish sources, including the Talmud and modern commentaries, will be examined.

Classes will be offered at Chabad Jewish Center in Blue Ash on either six Thursday mornings or six Monday evenings. Morning classes will be offered from 9:30 to 11 a.m. beginning Thursday, Feb. 4; evening classes will be offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. beginning Monday, Feb. 8.

The cost is $70; couples receive a 10 percent discount. A 50 percent discount, which includes a student textbook, is offered for those who sign up with a new student.

Anyone interested may attend the first lesson free, with no obligation.

The course is open to the public; no prior experience in Jewish learning is required.
