New London, Conn. - A course that examines the therapeutic effects of the Jewish Sabbath, or day of rest, is slated to begin next week.

Rabbi Avrohom Sternberg, spiritual leader of Congregation Ahavath Chesed in New London, will teach the six-session course that begins May 11. The course called “Oasis in Time: The Gift of Shabbat in a 24/7 World,” includes a taped introduction by U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, I-Conn., a Sabbath-observant Jew. Lieberman is currently writing a book about the Sabbath.

The Jewish Sabbath occurs every Friday night and runs until Saturday night the next day.

Day and night sessions are planned. The night sessions begin at 7:30 p.m. on May 11 at the former Holiday Inn New London (now called the Latitude 41 Hotel). The day sessions begin at 12:30 p.m. on May 12 at Ahavath Chesed, 590 Montauk Ave., New London.

The course fee is $79 including textbook and there is a 10 percent discount for family registration.
