The Brooklyn-based Rohr Jewish Learning Institute has begun offering classes on the Midpeninsula in Jewish heritage, thought and tradition. Courses start this month and will be held at Congregation Beth Jacob at 1550 Alameda de las Pulgas in Redwood City.

"At the heart of Jewish culture there has always been Jewish learning an engaged and vibrant meeting of minds," said Rabbi Levi Potash, who will teach the local classes. He is director of the Chabad Jewish Center of the Mid Peninsula.

The first course, "Fascinating Facts: Exploring the Myths and Mysteries of Judaism," will be held for six Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m., starting Nov. 8. It will offer "a comprehensive overview of Jewish heritage to promote a Jewish cultural literacy," Rabbi Potash wrote in a press release.

Biblical events, Jewish foods and the Hebrew language will be among the topics covered in the class. Participants do not need to have any background in Jewish learning.

The course fee, which covers textbooks and refreshments, is $89.

Next year, the course "Money Matters" is scheduled to begin in February, followed by "The Art of Marriage" in May.
